Support for those bereaved by suicide
You do not have to cope with a suicide bereavement alone.
A death by suicide can be devastating for family members, friends, colleagues, classmates and communities. Grief can be intense and complex and may affect every aspect of life.
You may experience shock, sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, numbness or loneliness. There is no right or wrong way to feel, and your emotions may change from one day to the next.
Support is available immediately after a suicide and in the months and years that follow.
Looking after yourself
- Talk to someone you trust when you feel ready.
- Accept practical and emotional support from others.
- Look after basic needs such as food, rest and medication.
- Give yourself time and avoid putting pressure on yourself to grieve in a particular way.
- Contact your GP or a support service if you are struggling to cope.
- Seek urgent help if your grief is accompanied by thoughts of suicide or you feel unable to keep yourself safe.
Supporting a child or young person after a suicide
Children and young people often move in and out of grief. They may ask the same questions repeatedly, become withdrawn, show changes in behaviour or worry about the safety of people around them.
You can help by:
- using honest, clear and age-appropriate language.
- reassuring them that they can ask questions and talk about their feelings.
- maintaining routines where possible.
- informing their school, college or nursery so support can be put in place.
- seeking professional support if you are concerned about their wellbeing or safety.
