King College London Teaching
In each block, a full day of teaching will run on Thursdays. Teaching is aimed at being an interactive group activity rather than didactic lectures.
Topics are typically timetabled by week. An example of the teaching timetable is as follows:
- Week 1: Induction
- Week 2: Student on placement
- Week 3: Every Day/Every Night Psychiatry On-Call
- Week 4: Child Mental Health
- Week 5: Risk/Risk to Others
- Week 6: Older Adult Mental Health
- Week 7: Student on placement
- Week 8: MLA Week & Catch-up
Teaching is delivered across various locations in Kent, by our consultant psychiatrists and resident doctors who are passionate about education and strive to prepare and empower the next generation of medics. Every teaching day is also attended by the Undergraduate Administrator who offers full support to both the faculty and the students.
A timetable is sent to students prior to Induction and an agenda for each teaching session prior to the event.
Kent and Medway Medical School
Currently we receive medical students from the Kent & Medway Medical School who are in Year 3 and Year 5 of their training programme. Year 3 students are divided into three rotations and Year 5 students are divided into five rotations.
YEAR 3:
Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust provides the Core Teaching for the Psychiatry Module of the KMMS Year 3 curriculum which runs one day a week from October to November (6 weeks) then January to June (5 weeks). A staggered flipped classroom model is used where Students engage with self-directed learning materials during one half of the day (morning or afternoon) and attend an in-person consolidation session during the other on Thursdays.
There are Eleven Psychiatry Core Teaching days during which a wide range of Psychiatry topics are covered. Teaching is supported by Higher Trainees (Education Fellows), Core Trainees and Consultant Psychiatrist Subject Experts.
Psychiatry Placement days are provided every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. During each rotation students will spend half of their placements in one location and then swap to a different location for the second half of the rotation. Every student will receive an inpatient placement and a placement in a community setting.
YEAR 5:
Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust provides a clinical placement for KMMS students in the final year of their medical degree. Each student has a 3-week rotation with KMPT during which they will spend 8 days on placement under the clinical supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist. Students are also required to undertake a session in a Liaison Psychiatry team. Additionally, students are required to attend psychiatric teaching and simulation in a central-Kent location on two Tuesdays within the rotation. Students are required to complete workplace-based assessments as well as a written clinical communication assessment during their 3-week rotation with the Trust.
Reasonable pre-approved travel expenses incurred from accommodation to clinical work placement and teaching will be reimbursed by Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust.
Your undergraduate administrator (UA) will give you a form to complete and monies will be paid directly into your bank account.
Students who drive and bring a car to their mental health placement should inform their UA and discuss travel arrangements prior to seeking reimbursement.
For King’s College London students only - Your one return journey at the end of your mental health block will be reimbursed by KCL and as such, the KCL travel policy should be followed for reimbursement.
“During my placement I could not have been happier or more comfortable. I had all of my activities scheduled and it provided me with a range of experiences each week to allow me as much exposure as I could have in my 6 weeks. I was happy to be included in the other school’s teaching sessions, as well. Additionally, coming from Margate, transport was arranged to and from my placements, which definitely was a great help. I had an excellent time throughout”.
