Colleagues at Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust have transformed an unused concrete courtyard at Sevenscore Ward in Thanet into a serenity garden, creating a welcoming outdoor space where colleagues can take time out during busy working days.

The project was led by colleagues on the ward, with administrative staff, healthcare assistants, nurses, the ward consultant, Dr Ipe, and other volunteers giving their own time to bring the space to life. The courtyard has been cleared, refreshed and planted to create the beginnings of a peaceful garden, with additional planting, solar lanterns and a rockery feature planned as it continues to develop.
Tom Turbefield, Sevenscore Ward Manager at Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust, said: “We wanted to make better use of the space and create somewhere colleagues could step away from the ward for a few moments during a busy shift. We are excited to see the garden continue to flourish over the coming months.”
The project reflects the teamwork, pride and commitment shown by colleagues across Sevenscore Ward, who came together to create a positive space that supports staff wellbeing.

Lianne Joyce, Deputy Chief Nurse at Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust said: “This is a fantastic example of colleagues working together to improve the working environment for one another. Having access to outdoor spaces where colleagues can take a moment to pause and recharge during a busy shift can make a real difference to wellbeing and resilience.
“When our colleagues feel supported and valued, they are better able to provide the compassionate, high-quality care our patients deserve. This project demonstrates the dedication and kindness that teams across our trust show every day.”
The garden will continue to develop over the coming months as new planting becomes established and additional features are added, creating an attractive outdoor space for colleagues to enjoy for years to come.
