Young people across Kent and Medway can now volunteer at Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award, as the trust is now the only county’s DofE accredited mental health organisation.

The accreditation means young people aged 14 to 24 will be able to take part in structured volunteering at our trust as part of their DofE Award. The scheme helps young people build confidence, develop skills and gain experience while contributing to their local communities.

Dr Adrian Richardson, Director of Transformation and Partnerships for Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust, said: “Becoming an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award provider is an important milestone for the trust. It also allows us to offer young people structured volunteering opportunities that support their development.

“It also helps raise awareness of mental health and the support available. We hope those who volunteer with the trust will share with others that we are here to support children, young people and adults to live well.”

The accreditation supports the trust’s wider focus on prevention, early intervention and recovery. By creating structured volunteering opportunities, the initiative aims to encourage open conversations about mental health, reduce stigma and help young people understand how to access support.

Kirsty McInnes, Charity and Volunteers Lead for Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust, said: “We are really excited to offer volunteering opportunities through this accreditation. It ensures young people have access to structured experiences that support both their wellbeing and future development. It also introduces participants to the range of mental health support available in their communities and provides valuable insight into possible careers within mental health services.”

All volunteering placements will be developed in line with DofE guidance, including safeguarding, supervision and clear role design. Opportunities will be risk assessed and supported by staff to ensure they are appropriate and beneficial for participants.
